Essex Construction Firm Fined £30000 for Roof Fall

Prestige Construction Services Ltd have been fined for safety failings and an employee broke his spine after falling through a skylight on a Hampshire construction site in Hampshire.
The worker who wants to remain anonymous has fully recovered since his fall on 16 August 2011 but couldn’t work for six weeks.
His employer Prestige Construction Services Ltd of Rainham were prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive on 12 August this year after an investigation found there were ‘inadequate measures in place to prevent or mitigate the fall.
Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court were told that the employee was helping construct the roof for a new build community centre. In the roof there were seven open holes where the skylights were going to be placed they had no safety nets coverings or guard rails around them to protect the workers from falling
He fell nearly four metres and landed on his back and broke his spine. Magistrates were told that the employee was lucky that he made a quick recovery with no lasting damage.
Prestige Construction Services Ltd of West Close Rainham Essex was fined £30000 and were order to pay costs of £9000 after pleading guilty to single breaches of the Work at Height Regulations 2005 and Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2007. (According to Health and Safety Executive)
