Flexible Work Can Cut Stress – The Head of Our Stress at Work Department Thinks so Too

Employers should be introducing flexible working hours as it is “critical” in combating the increasing stress at work problem as said in a new report.
4000 participants were part of the survey and over half of those who participated witnessed more stress-related illnesses amongst staff since the economic downturn.
Nearly half of the participants questioned by the workplace provider Regus this was responsible for growing numbers of absenteeism and also harmed productivity.
Richard Coulthard Head of Stress at Work Department said: ‘Flexible working is hugely beneficial as a stress prevention method. Those individuals suffering with stress can have difficulties sleeping and I have often received comments from client stating that due to sleeping difficulties they struggled to arrive at work for their start time and this further exacerbated their symptoms.
‘Unfortunately a culture has developed in this country whereby employees are expected to work hours over and beyond their contract hours and I think many employers would laugh at the suggestion of allowing employees flexible working.
‘The reality is that employers should take reasonable steps to assist employees who are known to be suffering with stress related illness or who are known to be at risk of stress related illness. If that includes the possibility of flexible working then this should be considered on a case by case basis.’
