German Bosses Can’t Email Employees In Their Free Time

Stress at work is a hot topic and everyday there is a new solution on how to combat stress on the internet. Be it bringing your pet to work taking up exercise leading a health lifestyle or for some mice just having more estrogen. In Germany some bosses have followed a different path.
Germany’s employment ministry have put a ban on employer’s sending their employees emails or contacting employees outside of work hours. They are doing this in the hope that workers won’t burn out and experience stress at work.
BMW Volkswagen and Puma already use this initiative. Employers and other employees aren’t permitted to send work emails to one another outside working hours so to avoid stress at work.
VW has gone as far as to ensure that no emails are forwarded to staff from their company servers half an hour after the working day.
Other companies have said that employees are not expected to check emails at the weekend or during out-of-work hours.
The only room for negotiation with this rule is if the task can’t be postponed to the following working day.
The ministry want the managers to practice “minimum intervention” into their employee’s free time to keep the number of people who’s out of hours time is disrupted as little as possible.
The ministry wanted the companies to set clear rules earlier this year over when their employees are available outside of work hours saying that “technology should not control us.”
Working outside of hours and particularly worker’s free time came under scrutiny in July after Carsten Scholter chief executive of Swisscom (Switzerland’s biggest telecoms group) was found dead in his home after a suspected suicide.
Months prior to his death Mr Scholter had said “ The most dangerous thing that can happen is that you drop into a mode of permanent activity.”
