Widower of Diabetic Wife had to Call 999 Whilst in Hospital to Get his Wife a Drink
Bridget Callan 62 consistently pressed the emergency button to get a sugary drink because she was concerned her blood sugar levels were low.
Due to her diabetes if Mrs Callan’s sugar levels became too low she would have been in danger of losing consciousness.
No one answered her call in the early morning so she called her husband Paul who was at home to explain the situation. He called the Tameside Hospital ward in Greater Manchester and spoke to a nurse.
She waited another 20 minutes and no nurse turned up so she called her husband again after no one had brought her a drink.
Mr Callan then phoned the police and the switchboard operator transferred him to the hospital. Following his call Mrs Callan was provided with a sugary drink.
Four days later Mrs Callan died from lung disease and chronic heart failure complicated by C.difficile.
