Why aren’t you Claiming your Money Back?

Having a flight delay hanging over the start of your trip like a murky raincloud is less than ideal.

You’re all packed up, passports in hand and you’ve finished browsing the bargains in duty free but for many reasons your flight may not take off when it’s meant to – meaning that you arrive later than you should.  In fact, a Which? Survey found that nearly a third of flights are delayed.  Considering that Heathrow Airport calculated that there was over 1200 flights daily from that airport alone, the number of people arriving late is not insignificant.

Yet since 2005, when consumers became able to claim for the delays suffered, many have missed out.  The Daily Mail estimates this to be £3.5 billion in missed compensation. That’s a lot of extra spending money for next year’s holiday.

Under EU regulations, many people are entitled to compensation where they are delayed by 3 hours or more, but most of those people – including those who experienced the delay up to 6 years ago- aren’t claiming.  Recent Which? Figures show that 62% of people who are entitled to claim do not.

The research found that Thomas Cook and Monarch are the two worst airlines, and the worst affected routes are those to popular tourist destinations Orlando and Montego Bay.

So why are people not claiming what they’re entitled to?

Is it because the hassle of lugging around that heavy backpack with a grumpy toddler in tow was enough inconvenience for one trip? Do the airlines scare you off, quoting legal jargon? Does it seem too good to be true?

It might seem like a David and Goliath battle but we’ve helped many people obtain what they’re entitled to from airline giants including British Airways, Thomas Cook and others.
