Guillain-Barré Syndrome (often referred to as GBS) is a rare and serious neurological condition in which the immune system attacks its peripheral nervous system.
Whilst the cause of Guillain-Barré Syndrome isn’t fully understood, in many cases it is thought to be triggered by a viral or bacterial infection. The condition can present in different ways and the effects can range from mild weakness to total paralysis.
As GBS is a rare condition that only affects around 1 in 100,000 in the UK, there can often be a delay in diagnosis. Diagnosis can also be difficult and can depend on when certain tests are carried out. If you have suffered from Guillain-Barré Syndrome and believe your diagnosis and treatment was negligent, you may be entitled to compensation.
We operate from offices in Leeds, but help claimants in all of England and Wales. Rest assured, your case will be in good hands.

Unfortunately, there is no known cure for Guillain-Barre Syndrome; treatment is, therefore, aimed at reducing the severity of symptoms and focuses on rehabilitation of the nerves. Most people who suffer from GBS can make a full recovery, but they will require months of physiotherapy and other treatment to get back to normal. It can sometimes take years for patients to make a full recovery and many patients can be left with long term effects such as numbness or muscle weakness in the affected area.
Long term complications are more likely to occur when there has been a delay in diagnosis, so it is imperative that the symptoms are spotted as early as possible.
At Michael Lewin we specialise in cases involving neurological injury, including cases where Guillain-Barre Syndrome has been misdiagnosed.
Our head of department Carol is currently acting on behalf of a client who was initially told her condition was psychological. As a result, it took nearly eight months to make the correct diagnosis, leaving her with significant long term disabilities.
If you, or a relative has suffered from medical negligence during their diagnosis of Guillain-Barré Syndrome, then you may be entitled to compensation. Contact us to find out if you could make a claim.
