What Is Cauda Equina?

The nerves at the base of the spine are known as the Cauda Equina and provide sensory and motor functions to the lower limbs, bladder, bowel, genitals and rectum. When the Cauda Equina becomes damaged as a result of a lower back condition urgent surgery will be required to relieve the pressure before nerve damage takes a hold and is permanent.

 Symptoms Of Cauda Equina?

Cauda Equina Syndrome arises when the Cauda Equina (nerves at the base of the spine) become compressed, crushed or damaged.   Cauda Equina syndrome is a medical emergency in which the patient will require immediate spinal decompression surgery to relieve the pressure placed upon the nerves.

Symptoms Of Cauda Equina Syndrome?

The compression of the nerves often causes patients to experience one or more of the following:

  • Increased lower back pain.
  • Numbness in the groin and lower limbs
  • Pins and needles sensations or electric shock sensations in the legs
  • Bladder difficulties including urgency, frequency or incompetence.
  • Bowel incontinence

Delay In Diagnosis/Treatment

Immediate diagnosis and treatment of Cauda Equina Syndrome is paramount to the success of the treatment.  Early intervention can result in complete resolution of symptoms; however delays can be devastating.  The longer you have been deprived of treatment the more damage that will be caused to the nerves and may result in permanent irreversible damage.

If you consider that there was a delay in implementing treatment then you may be eligible to bring about a claim for compensation.  Our specialist team are on hand to discuss your treatment with you and advice further as to what your choices are.
