Steel Company Prosecuted After Worker Seriously Injures Hand

Tata Steel has received a fine for safety failings after a worker suffered serious injuries to his hand at the company’s works in Llanelli South Wales.
Llanelli Magistrates heard (3 January) the man who had worked for the company for 34 years was working on a production line at the Tata site in Trostre on 6 December 2012 when his left hand was trapped in pair a steel pinch rolls.
He was left with crush injuries which meant that half his index finger and part of his middle finger had to be amputated.
A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation found that there was insufficient guarding equipment on the machinery that the worker was using. Tata Steel Uk Ltd has not assessed the risk to workers using the equipment properly despite the significant risk the operatives faced who had access to dangerous parts.
Tata Steel UK Ltd Millbank London received a fine of £25000 and had to pay £8320 in costs after pleading to three separate breaches of Health and Safety legislation.
