Mother Suffers Allergic Reaction to Sun Cream and Has to Foot the Bill
Marie Goldie 37 from Glasgow suffered an allergic reaction which left her fearing for her life suffering with a swollen face and eyes– which she believes was because of Piz Buin 1 Day Long sun cream.
Marie Goldie was on holiday in Tenerife with her boyfriend and her two children when she was taken to hospital because of an allergic reaction.
Miss Goldie applied the Piz Buin 1 Day Long sun cream on a Wednesday and over a two day period she went from having a rash on her face to her eye and face being swollen all over and being unable to see.
Due to the severe allergic reaction Miss Goldie suffered which she believed was due to the Piz Buin sun cream she had to be taken to hospital because the doctors in the Playa de las Américas thought she would need an emergency operation.
She was provided with four steroid injections and antihistamines which bought the allergic reaction down. She claimed that the medical staff told her she would have to pay for her treatment and discharged her because her travel insurance didn’t cover allergic reactions.
She paid €100 and the staff told her to avoid sunlight and not to eat sugary or fatty foods. The next week she spent days trying to look for ways to get home early she was unable to find any cheap flights and went home on the original date planned.
Miss Goldie told the Daily Mail that the weather was not to blame for her allergic reaction as it was only 23C when she was out there and the only thing she had done differently was to use the Piz Buin 1 Day Long sun cream.
The Piz Buin sun cream has already attracted attention after being featured on BBC Watchdog where viewers reported similar allergic reactions.
Since the programme was broadcast last Wednesday the programme makers have had a lot more cases reported. Viewers reported rashes and blisters after using the Piz Buin 1 Day Long sun cream.
Marie’s GP here confirmed that it was an allergic reaction and tests have been arranged to see if Piz Buin was responsible.
The makers of the sun cream Johnson & Johnson offered Marie £5 refund for her reaction.
Dr Ian White from St John’s Institute of Dermatology told the BBC that an ingredient in the Piz Buin 1 Day Sun Cream had been identified as an allergen.
The chemical ‘C30 -38 olefin/isopropyl maleate/MA’ was found in tests to provoke reactions in tests. Dr White told BBC Watchdog said that urgent action needed to be taken in order to test the products safety.
