Welsh Government Calls for Cosmetic Surgery Probe Following Breast Implant Scandal
An expert group is to be created in Wales to determine whether tighter regulations are necessary in relation to plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures.
This news announcement from Health Minister Mark Drakeford comes after last month’s report on the subject of cosmetic surgery in England was published and which called for tougher rules and regulations.
Following the Poly Implant Prothese (PIP) scandal where a significant number of industrial grade silicone breast implants ruptured and leaked the Welsh government paid for 245 patients to have their faulty implants removed.
It is thought that the formation of such an expert group is a direct response to this scandal.
The group will be made up of people from each of these groups:
The National Specialist Advisory Groups for Plastic Surgery
The Academy of Medical Royal Colleges in Wales
Healthcare Inspectorate Wales
The Welsh Healthcare Specialised Service Commission
The Welsh Independent Healthcare Association
They will be reporting back in July.
