Whirlpool Tumble Dryers problems
Hotpoint, Creda, Indesit, Proline and Swan brands are currently in the process of fixing an estimated 4.3 million faulty tumble dryers across the UK after their parent company, Whirlpool, notified customers of a widespread safety defect last October.
A Safety Recall notice has been sent out for Tumble Dryers manufactured between April 2004 and September 2015.
In a majority of cases consumers are unaware of problems with their tumble dryers, but some have seen smoke coming from their appliances and in extreme situations some machines have caught fire and have resulted in serious damage to homes.
There appears to be a problem with the design of them which means that fluff and lint can build up around the heating element in the machine and cause a fire.

Whirlpool have estimated that it could take up to 12 months to fix all appliances, and until faulty ones are made safe, Whirlpool have suggested that consumers only operate their machines under supervision.
Product Liability expert Paul McMullan disagrees with Whirlpool, “Their advice to only use potentially hazardous appliances under supervision is incredibly short-sighted and we can’t support it, even if they are being watched, one of these tumble dryers could still catch fire, our advice is clear – do not use a faulty appliance at all, and to wait for the engineers visit to fix the problem.”
Paul continued, “We know that Whirlpool are working hard to sort the problems, but they need to be working even harder as they are putting lives at risk with every day that goes by.”
“We also would love to see an overhaul of the Safety Recall system, because at the moment only an estimated 10-20% of recalled products are ever returned or repaired and there is no penalty on manufacturers who inform consumers late about a recall and no incentive for manufactures to ensure that a higher percentage of items are actually returned.”
